In other countries like Australia and UK though, there is no real import charges for low cost parts... I have imported countless phones (one at a time) over from China and had no issues, so for Australia and the UK... $80 US is a good amount, also that would get a game or as you said, hardware upgrade somewhere :-)

Well, Americans shipped their garbage to China for decades, so if the technology was supposed to be kept a secret, that is careless mismanagement at the very least. I still have my first computer, and it is not going into a landfill. I resurrected it yesterday and will later try to upgrade it.

Taobao is the ebay and Amazon of China. They actually have a fantastic return policy. If the product isn't as described you first ask the seller to fix it and if they refuse you can go through Taobao themselves and they will force the seller to refund and fix the transaction. It is actually a very trustworthy website specifically because of this return policy. Lots of fake stuff to be had but that's part of the fun haha.

as they are of same architecture, mobile cpu have more pins than desktop ones may be because of more power pins, this is result of denser and smaller pins can transfer less power thus more pins are needed(even desktop cpu socket power pins are also populated). while it is mounted over a desktop socket adapter, power pins can be rearranged and grouped. meanwhile newer intel mobile cpus are SoC (mm... more accurately, SoP), besides the cpu core there would also be a PCH(and a dedicate GPU, like i9 8950HK). if anyone want to modify it for desktop, he or she need to reroute the DMI lanes to the socket, and let the pins from PCH on package omitted. it should be less pins (may be?)

That comes down to budgeting. When you are dealing with a certain price range you try saving where you can to get best performance. Prime example if you can save 10 bucks on processor and ram that's 20 bucks that could be put into a slightly better video card for overall performance boost in gaming. The down side to doing it is you will not really have much upgrading options down the road.
