After a great 1974 season, Barcelona lost power in 1975 when the Dutch player Neeskens was signed in. Every time Cruyff got the ball he looked for Neeskens as if there were no other Barcelona mates. Barcelona had a great player on the bench, who was more effective than Neeskens, the Peruvian Hugo Sotil. A terrible waste of an excellent man, just because the DT did not dare to bench the 2nd star of then mighty Holland National Team.

Five Scottish players in the first eleven (&probably two on the bench: Lorimer & Harvey) in a European Cup semi-final .. what the fuck has gone wrong these days?? SFA should hang their heads in shame. Leeds nearly robbed here as they were in the final that year. Jordan handball like he did v Wales in the WC qualifier v Wales in 1977. Great Leeds team back then.

In today's refs eyes there's around 5 red card tackles just in the first 5 minutes between the battling midfielders. How I miss this version of the beautiful game, a tough man's game. And not a single female commentator or lineswoman to see nor heard.

@Nathan N The pitches and equipment are 10 times better now. Look at the uneven mud pitches they had to play on back then, stiff boots and heavy balls. it was amazing they were still able to control and pass the ball so well. Your ignorance is disgraceful. Let's see Barca play on these pitches, boots and balls.

    • Nathan N

ojideagu The speed of play is so much faster now, and the fitness levels of every Barca player are so much higher as well... Just look at how slow these guys are in this footage... The defensive systems weren’t as good either.., maybe we can lower it to 8 goals just for you, hows that?

    • ojideagu

Right?! How things have changed!! In this footage, I notice the old ref, the back passes to the goalie, the goalie holding, dribbling, then picking up again,.. the forward pestering the goalie during the punt, the goalie having limited steps to punt,.. and the cameramen just inches away from the end line.... And yes, a modern Barca team would put up ten goals in the first half...

In this era the top European Clubs such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona were loaded with stars. Barca were a “super team” of imported talent Leeds United’s (nearly - apart from Giles) all British team were a match for them. It was the end of an era for Leeds at this time as they had an ageing team. The point is that

    • John Taylor-Cox

      John Taylor-Cox

Richard Finn I think I was eager to compare them to Celtic who were all (correct me if I’m wrong) from the Glasgow area and won the European Cup. That won’t happen again. Anyway, if I was Johnny Giles I’m sure I wouldn’t want to be called British. Very annoying

900k for a player in 1975 though! Crazy money back then, worth it and very few clubs if any others at all could have paid that, Cruyff was fucking amazing, I did the AJAX ground tour recently and his legend lives on, Made really intense after a nice smoke (fuck it, I was in Amsterdam) Seeing the 3 European cups won in a row is amazing Obviously includes the original full size one Amazing player And it was watching players like cruyff that made me fall in love with the game growing up.

'Hand of Jordan'. He knew he handled it but still raised his arm in acknowledgement of the goal. This just goes to show what a disgraceful playing attitude he had in that he was prepared to handle the ball to score a goal and let everyone believe it was a legitimate headed goal. Good job the ref saw it and disallowed the goal. Just goes to show that no matter what the year, there are football players who will try to cheat to get a win.

    • Felix Carpio

      2 tháng trước

Well, you can replay them by yourself. VNchannel allows you to do that. As early as 1966 replays were possible, but it was until WC 1970 that replays were systematically done for important plays; including the goals of course. But, it required equipment and some skills of the TV recording team not always available everywhere, and the criteria of what play was important variated.
