Make the MacBook THICC Again

MacBook Pro reviews show problems from being too thin. The 16" MacBook Pro will hopefully fix some of this stuff.

+Serge Meeuwsen Apple has a monopoly on Mac OS compatible hardware, which is the whole reason why it's able to get away with selling trash hardware at a premium. Mac OS in turn represents a monopoly on viable desktop UNIX (as Linux user I can tell you that it's not viable). The whole point of having a monopoly is to sell less for more, and the amount of monopoly power Apple gets from the US govt is absolutely obscene. Nothing will change until the laws are fixed. To me, Apple's aesthetics scream flashy marketing, which is why I don't like them - though to be fair everything except thinkpad screams of that. However, aesthetics are also a reason why they can't offer a competent machine. They favor shiny aluminium over light and robust composites. The aesthetics are another way in which Apple seeks monopoly power - the want something that stands out and "builds the brand" as opposed to something that works.

I bought my MacBook Pro 2015 used about 2 years ago. I want to upgrade, and I do like to have a MacOS laptop (I have a windows PC for gaming), but honestly, I just don’t think they’re viable anymore. And they definitely aren’t “Pro” laptops. Unless Apple does a redesign where they make these things pro laptops again, I think I’ll be upgrading to a new ThinkPad.

I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2017 and I loathe the keyboard. I use it as a work tool, so most of the time I use an older design mac external keyboard and monitor, but when I use it as a laptop it's horrible, clacky and harsh. The travel is too short and I have already started to experience keys sticking - baring in mind I mainly use an external keyboard, this is poor. Touchbar is indeed a gimmick, I haven't found a good application that uses wit well as yet - and as a work machine with the external monitor, it is rendered useless anyway. Come on apple you can do better than this - especially at the unbelievably high prices just to get 512gb storage....

  17. Nathaniel Calvert

    Ngày trước

Definitely thicker. My top spec 2017 has terrible battery life, the touch bar is still a gimmick, my right speaker has blown (not software, it's actually rattling around in there as if it's detached, and I rarely use the speakers, I definitely haven't cranked them up to high volumes), thermals are terrible - throttles like crazy when rendering basic 1080p video. Now, more recently, I've been getting weird slow downs and glitchy hanging when transferring files around - fearing it's early SSD failure, or at least needs to be wiped clean and reinstalled (FYI - I'm a power user, so I know how computers and operating systems work, and how to properly maintain them). I really miss my 2014 MBP, a better laptop all round. Magsafe, better connectivity, longer battery life, MUCH better keyboard, replaceable SSD, better thermals, SD card slots, no need to carry dongles around everywhere, no touch bar (you have to relearn the layout for every application - which makes for a really bad UX). I interchange between PC and Mac, but I've always preferred Apple MacBooks to Windows Laptops as in the past the premium price tag represented quality and reliability. The latest MacBook Pro is not worth the premium, I cannot rely on it as my daily workhorse and I am waiting for it to fail - I'll just be sure to keep it fully backed up and my trusty old 2013 MacBook Air on standby. Going forward though, my next laptop will be running Windows 10 (unless Apple release something that is actually designed for professionals, as the name suggests).

IMO no laptop should be branded as "Pro" that doesn't have 1) the capacity to cool itself so it can sustain it's spec'd performance 2) a reliable keyboard 3) the ability to recover data 4) upgrade-able parts 5) 5+hr heavy use battery life. You cannot fit that into a small profile. We need professional devices, that are powerful and extensible, not ones that fit into a manila envelope.

My two cents? Get rid of MacBook Air, let the ultrabook market be run by the iPad Pro; of course, with macOS and a usb-c port that works just like a normal computer. Meanwhile, make the MacBook Pro not only thicker, but easily repaired, refurbished and upgraded. The sealed off pieces times are over and the iPad Pro is the best 2 in 1 (or ultrabook, considering it's amazing performance) in the market but it has been cursed with a phone OS and a usb-c port that cherry picks what it accepts.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) that I got in 2015. Keeping this thing until it dies. I don't like the new MacBook Pros. I like my current (2014) butterfly switch travel more than the new one (with the 2011 MacBook Pro feeling the best to me), port selection is self-explanatory, I actually used to use my SD card reader quite often, no Magsafe unless you re-buy it through a third-party, I like my F keys, and I've had no issues with the laptop hardware so far. The new MacBook Pro seems like a very expensive step backward. On a side note, do you guys remember when the polycarbonate Macbooks used to come with the little media controller back in the day? Good times.

I could break down the cost effective alternatives to Apple engineering, all day. The keys should have been based on electronically controlled ‘Oobleck’ to not only allow us to shape the response profile, but also to tailor feedback motions, while providing a waterproof seal. Apple no longer aims for breakthrough engineering , everything they do is based on programmed obsolescence, with just enough satisfaction to keep people hooked.

I bought my 2015 13" MBP in 2016 because I knew the thinness and lack of I/O would be an issue, and I'm happy wth my decision. I got 16GB of ram and 512GB storage and all the connections I could want without every resorting to using a dongle. I'm not updating my MBP until at least the keyboard issue is resolved, and I want minimum an SD card slot. I don't want dongles. This year I bought last years 10.5" iPad Pro for the same reason. I didn't like the new design of the 11" iPad Pro. Yes it looks stunning, but at what cost? Plus I want a headphone jack, and since it's a companion device to my iPhone, I prefer the lightning connection. My iPad isn't a laptop replacement so USB-C isn't important to me. I think Apple is unbalanced towards form and not function. I love aesthetics (I'm a photographer) but not at the cost of functionality. Time is money and the newer Apple devices cost me time (and money on dongles). And yes I'm still holding on to my iPhone 8, the last great iPhone IMHO. It's boring but it works.

I’ve used apple computers for 12 years now. As a video editor I get through equipment. I refuse to buy a new MacBook Pro though for exactly all of the reasons you have mentioned. If they don’t address these issues and stop dig the hole they’re in I will be buying a windows machine for my next laptop. I know I’m not alone here as well. They seriously need to consider pro users who they have neglected. Final cut was the industry standard and over night they ruined it a lost everyone to avid or premiere, both of which work on windows so we no longer needed apple. Part of the reason apple become so popular is because they had all the professional creatives using apple for music, film, design etc. Neglecting to cater to those people will pave the way for a new standard that is not apple.

“Heavily crippled” lol wow, way to overstate the problem. The vast majority of people are NOT having this problem. Obviously there are still some, but the new design has definitely improved the reliability of the keyboard. They aren’t thin and light because of the aesthetic. That’s part of it, but what it’s really about is shaving weight off of them. You sit in an office and maybe take your laptop to a coffee shop sometimes, but many people are business professionals or students who are always on the go and every ounce then can shave off of the weight of that device makes it more portable and this may not be immediately apparent, but over time it definitely makes a difference.

They are not soldering the RAM and the SSD onto the mainboard to make the device thinner (Lenovo Thinkpad T480/T480s and maybe Dell XPS 15 9580 prove you wrong). The do it because of the same reason that they ditched the SD-Card-Slot. SD-Card-Slots could be used for nifty minidrives and the SSD could be exchanged for a OWC SSD. The only reason it is soldered on is to get rid of any possible memory expansion, let it be RAM or storage. So that they can fuck you hard if you need a Mac with more RAM and / or a higher storage option. Macs do definitely have their advantages. But Apple is screwing its customers hard on purpose. You know that, Dave. So don't tell something different.

I have the 2015 model of the MacBook Pro, and it is seriously the best laptop I've ever had. Still more than enough powerful for what I do (consultant and teacher in the print and graphics business. I run InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat). The computer has two USB ports, two thunderbolt 2 ports, HDMI out and an SD card reader, and it is still seriously thin. MORE than thin enough. I don't need it to be this thin, but it works, so that's fine. Also it has a magsafe adapter, which has saved my ass countless times when I have tripped over the charge cable. The keyboard is also more than acceptable for being a laptop keyboard. I have looked at the new models many times, but sadly i don't think I will be buying another MacBook Pro ever again. As you say, they look nice, but so what. They are seriously bad computers, with horrible keyboards and only USB-C ports (thunderbolt 3), and no magsafe. Welcome to adapter hell! They have sacrificed EVERYTHING for thinness. But it's really not that much thinner than my current laptop, so thats very disappointing. I don't understand what they are doing anymore. No more Mac laptops for me, sadly.
