I think as long as you know what your doing and what to do and what not to do, then it's a great idea to keep your engine clean. It makes it 10x easier to work on and if anything ever leaks you can spot it easily and if your engine does have years and years of build up on it and can cause various problems. Also if you have a mechanic work under the hood, their more likely to do a good job and do it right, because they know you'll say something if you look under the hood and there's oil and grease slung all over a spotless engine. But if you are 120% clueless about how a car works, then NO, it's not worth the risk, but it would definitely be worth it, to pay someone to do it right.

30 years ago I used to have a V6 pontiac that has a dirty engine. This car overheats easily. One day I brought it to a car washing service that uses pressure washers. I then had a clean engine and the over heating problems disappear. I since then pressure wash my succeeding cars ever since.

I don't recommend using a 3000 PSI pressure washer after using an engine cleaner/degreaser but washing it off with a garden hose and avoiding electrical parts, etc. is just common sense. Been doing this for over 40 years and no problems. Just can't stand a dirty, filthy engine compartment and feel better knowing I have it cleaned. (Runs better too)

I've owned 57 cars over the years and have cleaned each one many times with no trouble..With a clean engine I can see if I was to ever develop a leak and when I have to work on an engine, I can see where every bolt may be etc. I mainly do it for resale as a clean engine seems to just look more cared for than a dirty engine..dirty engine you just can't always tell what is a leak and what is old grease!! So I prefer a clean engine! Of course I do put a plastic bag over the alternator and know enough not to spray a harsh stream on any electrical areas as well as connectors..I think most newer cars are made to get some water on them from going through puddles anyway..It's the people that spray Tire Foam on an engine that have issues and the ones who use a high pressure wash on the engine...I use as little water as possible..

Iv yet to own a truc thats scared of water. In fact, here in the deep south a truc that caint go through 3ft of water is just a bath tub. I dont chrome my stuff up just to let it get covered in funk. That said, yes most engines are heat dispersed threw radiator but 2 inches of mud on the oil pan does zero good along with brakes, steering assy etc. I agree soaking engine and elec components with pressure is far worse than letting it be filthy but sometimes a little common sence comes into play when doing so...

I cannot agree with this one. In addition to making it easier to find leaks, a clean engine can save on potential repairs resulting from accelerated wear due to oil and grease getting on rubber hoses and plastic parts. There is also a safety factor. I have seen engines catch on fire because oil or transmission fluid had leaked onto the exhaust manifold. Also a clean engine helps with resale/trade-in value.

Oil and grease breaks down any rubber in the engine bay, you have to clean the engine. If your engine bay has alot of grease and oil from leaks it can and will catch on fire there buddy. Im not saying he’s wrong; but at a detail shop I worked at for awhile we were taught to keep the vehicle running, suds up everything , rub down everything , and power wash off everything (except hood blanket). We had more issues starting cars back up that we had turned off to wash, we only ever had issues with a couple that we left running In both cases once you let it dry for 30-60 min they’re usually fine If possible let it dry before attempting to start it back up
