Romania, Village Life in Transylvania

A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

Utterly fascinating documentary! I lived in farm country last year, in Canada, but those farms were comparatively modern, not quite as enlightening to see. As well, I did not do any work, but enjoyed nature from behind my window, venturing outside only occasionally to chat before fleeing from the wretched flies! ;) I highly respect these people for their simplicity of life---not to be confused with simplicity of mind! Their lives hearken back to an innocence, which, while not devoid of challenges, retains a richness of family, community, and tradition. There is enviable clarity and wisdom here, an understanding of true value in hard work and thankfulness for what one has. They do not strike me as endlessly confused or offended or depressed like much of our "advanced" world--perhaps because they haven't the time or luxury to make a meal of their problems, or to create them where none exist. I don't know that I would last a day out there, coddled suburban brat that I am, but I would do well to appreciate the invaluable beauty such an experience would bring. I surely, sincerely do! Thank you, Jenny, for sharing. Very marvellous and kind of you!

Land rates at rural places have gone up considerably, newer railway stns r built ,good and wide connecting roads r built though they dont last long and huge residential complexes r built with ppl investing in flats and renting out.

I must at least make double that and claim I make triple to not have kids and spend it on "organic" grocery items, packaged, pasteurized and carefully selected from extraneous trips to various grocers which at best had their goods shipped from the globe so that middlemen make all the profit and then tell all my peers that they don't live naturally. Oh, Im vegan BTW. Don't know if I mentioned that. Its because all humans are actually herbivores because I saw a youtube video that said that someone else said that. Anyone who says otherwise is simply backward, except the people I wish I were buying food from.

They don't say it, but it's a very very hard life up in the mountains and villages. The mountains are beautiful and the air smells amazing. People there are not necessarily always friendly and of course they don't speak a word of english. Oh, the video doesn't show it, but when hiking in the mountains/hills, one of the worse thing is to meet the shepherd dogs near those sheep farms, really not funny and the owners are not always around to call them. Worth asking in english on romanian hiking forums if you plan visiting solo or without a guide, note that lodging is basically non existent in such remote areas, however there are plenty of more touristic places in areas that are still worth visiting but they are really not used to strangers, Romania has still a very long way to go when it comes to foreign visitors, even the main city Bucharest doesn't have a single indicator in english (and I don't think it's really worth visiting it). The best to visit in Romania I believe are the mountains, you can hike for days (usually backpacking), the nature is outstanding in the right areas - even for romanians. Just ask on various tourist forums, they will help you gladly with information. Forgot to mention - the food you see in this film, the mountain farm milk, bread, mamaliga (polenta), vegetables, some garden fruits, cheese, etc. these have such a taste that has been long forgotten in our commercialized society. You will never eat again a tastier food that what these people prepare for themselves, even organic/bio food you buy in store doesn't even come close.

+John Banich True, romanian is close to italian language somehow. In fact, my comment was rather a wish, I hope they move faster and make the country a little more accessible to international tourism - especially for nature sightseeing. Speaking of Bucharest, the streets names are also not well marked but usually a honest taxi driver will walk your around for little money (notice the emphasys on 'honest', especially those waiting at the airport exit are basically a little mafia that will happily scam foreigners with very high fees - it's a bit of a wild country after all).

You right, there is no indicator in English but Romanian language is a Latin one and I guess is not hard to understand the minimum useful. To my best knowledge in UK there is no a single indicator in Romanian language. Stil I agree with you that Romanian authorities should impose, at least in big cities, English indicators.

The original name was not Erdely , it was DACIA under Emperor BUREBISTA. Hungary did not exist at that time. Tell me in what language Hungarians from USA communicate with American authorities ? Do we have in USA an official Hungarian language as American language? Why Hungarians from USA do not ask the American government for autonomy (land, laws, schools, universities, etc) ?

Gosh it reminds me of my Grandfather and how he worked on his small farm in Norfolk. Milked cows by hand, working with nature instead of against it. Grandmother's home made bread, cheese and butter. Preserves, fresh lemonade. Field mushrooms growing around cowpats. Fresh rabbit. The early starts to the day and early nights. 10am every morning Bible reading and prayers for family and country. Cup of tea with home made scones, butter and jam. After lunch without fail listen to the archers on the radio. No tv. No telephone. A simple life of hard work and satisfaction at the end of the day. Watching this video brought it all back to me. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.

Neat video! My great x3 Grandfather was a tailor from Bucharest and got a ticket to come to America. He settled in Canada and then New York. His offspring moved to Chicago and some came here in Kansas City where I am from. My Grandfather wrote an autobiography on his death bed back in the early 1920s about his life in Romania. A lot of adventure and some tragedy with it. I am so grateful to have had the privilege to look into his life. It is astonishing to think that anything else could have placed him in a different area, and I might never have existed. They say it takes millions and millions of people before you, to bring you into this world. That is how precious life is. Be grateful. Thanks for sharing.
