Is it the fact that intel can go turbo higher than amd that they get those better performance in games? Because really that seems like the only part that they have over amd. When I'm comparing products it looks like to me that amd is just unquestionably better, including pricing, except for that turbo speed.

I'm not surprised but the amd extra cores will make it better for things outside gaming/multitasking/streaming. So with AMD you get comparable performance but better multitasking. I really hope AMD keeps this up so we get some needed competition.

How much do the Intel security patches affect performance? Is this a situation where Intel was squeezing ahead a couple years ago but slid 6-10% after all the security issues? Can't wait for Ryzen 3. AMD take my money!

Short answer: BECAUSE INTEL COSTS SO FKING MUCH Example (prices will be different in other countries) Ryzen 5 2600 = ~160€ i5 9600k = ~300€ Single core: i5 is 23% faster Quad core: i5 is 25% faster Multi core: Ryzen is 20% faster So almost half the price but the overall processing power is better, and that's just Zen+, Zen 2 will be released in 1 month. Also AMD doesn't have shitty versions of their processors that can't be overclocked at all (basically they force you to buy a new one if you need more performance)

The i5 8400 is excellent value and totally underrated (my main system sport one). But I'd still go AMD where pretty much everything except the RAM has better price/performance value. I should have gone AMD for my late 2017 build. But I was unreasonably wary of AMD's poor performance history prior to Ryzen, and I had need of an integrated GPU for a while, and Ryzen APUs were still not out.

(I'm making a stupid joke that is a true fact but not the whole reason) I'll tell you why AMD is cheaper for good gaming, it's because they're placing APUs in their PCs so they don't have to place stupid on-board GPUs inside or spend a crap ton of money on a full blown graphics card which takes up PCIe slots as well.

Now you can game, although not at Ultra settings, and overall spare out $250 on ur budget. Note: For APU users, make sure to switch the internal memory usage for the graphices to 4GB (not auto or less) (It's THE most important setting in the whole system, since that's what the GPU will use..) (Also, it's the reaso for the 3200Mhz memory => dependancy) - currently doing assembly on this.. $400 in all for me (using used housing and 500W power supply) :D

Also, using 32GB Ram and skipping the NVMe SSD, you can opt for a RAMDRive, which would then be 24GB, which could be used to store the virtual memory, and in some cases to store the game you'd want to play. (tricky). I install on the Ramdrive, and once installed, copy it back onto the HDD. Upon boot, it refills the content with the install. (takes a little time), but then ZOOM !!!.. However, this would cost still $60 more.. (x2 for the memory)

Then again, I'm a bit biased anyway for AMD products, because I've been using the CPUs for 20yrs. Had to do some creative cooling solutions back then for the Athlon chips. mitigations=off (without internet) vs on in Manjaro Lignux with this same CPUs as now Intel is 40% worse after mitigations. Plus, of course, MS WOS and wine. Perhaps some games performance and video editing and rendering performance increases with Intel make worth to play - or render - wine - or Lignux native games or video editing software - offline and with mitigations=off, as it is 66% faster (60%x1.66=100) much more than any overclock

Chocolate dragon second the 2600x , outperforms 7700k and definitely 4790k and feels smooth gaming, does 4.2G@1.4v and 3333 c14 16gb and stayed just right sub 85c in p95 on 120 aio on a 4phase mitx vrm board. It’s still good. Only the 2700x is better cuz of binning and full core+CCX stacking. But if anyone wants an upgrade from 1 gen I wholeheartedly recommend 2600X it’s a massive boost over 1600 . Just make sure you get a decent cooler, and not the 2600 unless you hate singlethreaded performance.

This is just needlessly complicated Cases and PSUs work on both, so those could have been excluded especially as they don't impact performanceSo the "budget" could then have just been for drives, CPU, motherboard, cooler, ram and GPU but with a reflectively smaller budget and with an identical case and PSU being "assumed" for each build

I own both intel and AMD systems. For my most recent build (after years of not gaming) I went with AMD and I have no regrets. I have been an AMD fan since I was 14 when I built my first gaming system (33yo now) I am into this build for under 1k and not completely finished with it, however it is finished in the aspect of being a respectable gaming system. -ASUS Prime X470-Pro - $150 -Ryzen 5 2400g - $150 (because I wanted to wait to buy a card - will prob upgrade to 7 2700 eventually) -Sapphire Nitro+ RX590 - $229 -16GB Crucial tactical 3000mhz - $100 (will add another 16) -FSP HYDRO GE 550 - $75 -Crucial MX500 1TB SSD - $120 -Metallic Gear MG-NE510_SR01 Neo Series ATX Case Silver - $110 ***Total $932 I big part of the cost went into the aluminum and glass case which I forget exactly the cost but it was something like $110 and a 3 year warranty on all of the hardware. All things considered I still came in well under 1k and absolutely love the way the rig turned out. I am not a hardcore gamer by any means. I mostly just been playing Paladins with my g/f. With gfx maxed out the game is capping FPS solid at 175..which is totally overkill because I vsync 144hz.. but from the research I did prior to this build I should be able to see 60+fps max setting / 1080 on mostly any game that is out right now.
